| 2011 Tour: As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Romeo & Juliet
This JUNE, Grassroots brought three of Shakespeare's most beloved plays to your local park. This spectacular lineup of plays was our most ambitious season yet, and we were thrilled by its success!
As You Like It was performed in our own special brand of original practices, after only ten days of madcap rehearsals, and nary a director in sight. A Midsummer Night's Dream was our first experiment with all-male casting (a necessary feature of the Elizabethan stage), adding a new dimension to our exploration of original practices, and a whole new level of awesome to Shakespeare's romantic comedy. And finally, we were pleased to present a freshly remounted version of last year's hit, Romeo & Juliet. By throwing past productions into the mix, we more closely approximate the dynamics of an Early Modern repertory company, and offer even more variety to our incredibly brilliant patrons. About our Summer Shows:![]() Grassroots' 2009 Company
Because we're a traveling troupe, we rely on the generosity of local city parks, festivals, and theatres to lend us a patch of space. If you know the perfect place for a Grassroots show, please let us know!
Also, we love touring to church groups. If you think your congregation would like to spend an evening outdoors with the Grassroots Shakespeare Company, give us a jingle. We're confident that everyone, young and old, will have a fantastic time. 2010 Touring Show: Romeo & Juliet
From June 4th to July 5th, the GSC performed one of Shakespeare's most beloved romantic tragedies: Romeo and Juliet. And as audiences unanimously agreed, this play was full of comedy, action, poetry, and fun.
For more information about our unique rehearsal process, read this! What's unique about it? Well, we rehearse without a director, a stage manager, or a design team. You might think we're a bit crazy to put actors in complete control of a play. But before you write us off as lunatics, check out the review from UTBA! 2009 Touring Show: Much Ado About Nothing
In June of 2009, the GSC toured with its first production, the ever popular comedy Much Ado About Nothing. With no budget, no ticketing, and no scheduled venues, the show relied completely on social media and word-of-mouth advertising. By the end of the run, well over 600 people from across Utah Valley had participated in what Mel Sundquist of the UVU Review called "the most enjoyable Shakespeare production Utah theatergoers have had the chance to see in at least the last 5 years."
We like to think that the success we had with this first show was due in large part to the benefits of original-practices. We intentionally set out to put up a show sans director, sans design team, sans promotion... sans everything! Just a troupe of actors, equally invested in every facet of the production. As each actor stepped up and took on the extra responsibilities, the show became a truly collaborative effort, and I think that sense of collaboration shone through in performance.
